Land mine detection in war struck areas is a major concern for humanlife safety. Several land mine detection systems such as acoustic sensors, infrared imaging,nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), nuclear quadruple resonance (NQR), X-ray backscatter,electric impedance tomography (EIT), mechanical methods (prodders and probes), vapor sensorsand microwaves have been used so far. However, the existing land mine detection systems haveseveral limitations in terms of their efficiency and threat associated with their use to human life.Metal detector based robotic wireless land mine detection system which uses GPS and spraypaint to mark the mines can be used to provide an efficient mechanism for detecting land minesand also perform surveillance tasks without any human life threat.
This project provides a design and implementation of land mine detection and surveillancesystem using wireless robot with real-time land mine searching and spying algorithm withobstacle avoidance capabilities. The design works on Wi-Fi technology by placing robot in thetargeted area where there is suspicion of mine deployment and initiates a designed task beingcontrolled by remote to detect the mine. A live video feedback provides the visual details of thetargeted area, transmitting its video through Wi-Fi module. The mine is detected using minedetection sensor (metal) by Faradays Law of Electromagnetic Induction.
The coordinates of theidentified mine are sent through GPS module to the operator in the control room. When a mine isdetected the robot will use spray paint to mark the area so that the area is clearly identified. Therobot is equipped with night vision camera so it can also be used during night time for detectingmines and it can also be used as a spy robot during night by sending live video feedback to theoperator in the control room. Security agencies can also utilize the proposed mine detection andsurveillance system that has latest technology thereby reducing the risk to human life in suchcritical scenarios.The main motivation of this project was to develop a land mine detection and surveillancesystem in which involvement of humans is kept to a minimum point ensuring the safety ofhuman life.
