To get to the root of this topic, it has to be realized that thetheory of human superiority exists because of different requirements andcultures. It is noticeable from Singer P’s book (1991) view that: “Humans are just like any other animal, we don’t deserve any special treatment.” But humans are tended to think ourselves as better and smarter than other animals. At this point, humans are the most dangerous predators.
In the other words, humans just considerourselves as gods and make rules to decide who or what will live or becomehumans’ tools. Just because humans – the omnivores are at the top of the food web, does that give us – human the right to take animals’rights away? Nowadays, humansconsider ourselves as the king of planet earth which lead to the arbitraryright for humans to treat any animals as implements. And it’s clear thatwidening heavy industries and exploiting natural materials is the fastest wayto destroy and demolish animals’ habitats and also the Earth itself.
Forexample, humans pulling down trees and wiping out all forest for high buildingsas 13 million hectares of forest, have been converted into skyscrapers andhumans’ utilities. 1 Also with a few experiments taken by WHO, it has shown that inbalanced diet meattakes over 20% of 35% nutrients intake daily for a perfectly healthy person2. And there are 7.6billion (nearest number in January 2018) citizens all around the world whichconsumes a huge amount of meat each day. As based on the global meatconsumption 3, the total amount of meat consumption was 68 355 thousand tones in2016. Furthermore, in thejournal “Animal Behavior and Cognition” by neuroscientist Lori Marino andKristin Allen called “The Psychology of Cows” 4, they have shown thatcows have exactly the same emotions as boredom, shyness and stress which affectand alter their daily actions and schedule just like humans. Creatures have additional feelings as they further have same emotions like humans as they show adore, love toward their families. Creatures furtherendure torment, emotions, as physically or rationally.
Base on the research ofGregory Berns, a professor of neuroscientist economics at Emory University,Atlanta 5 has shown from the x-rayscan of dogs’ brains that they have the same parts for emotions as humans do.Also with a careful study by Swiss researchers led by Redouan Bshary 6 have documented that cleanersfish also are very careful with their patrons as they gently caressing themwith their fins. As they show their carefulness to others as humans do. But it has been seen that numerous circumstances when individuals don’t expose any generosity towards creatures. Individuals put an end to various types of creatures for unique events, for example, parties, weddings that demonstrates the cruelty of humans. Animalsare not only being used for food. They are also being used for entertainment.
Tobe specific, in Vietnam, it is no need for permission to use all kind ofanimals for any purposes. As the news from 7 Thanh Nien News “Da Nang animal charity accused of sellingdogs to restaurants” by Dieu Hien (Sunday, April 17, 2016) in Dan Nang – Vietnamand also images of dogs’, cats’ meat uploaded by The Guardian, have shown thateven the government organization could freely use animals for money and profit. This has shown that our policies are not strong enough and thoughtful enough toprotect animals. Only from the small part of the world which is in Vietnam, itis clear that even the closest and most loyalty pet like dogs or cats can be killedfor food. Furthermore, it is not the short-term action, it has existed inVietnam for decades. Most of the Vietnamese citizens consider that as ordinarywhich is a huge difference from the Western and also some other Asian countriestraditional and perspectives. Unluckily, the technology is not good enough forus to understand what animals want.
But it is sure that animals do not want tobe humans’ slaves and tools. This life just accidentally took away their rightto be free. Not only being used, animals are also being slaughtered andterminated for other industrial benefits.
With all the evidence and data from PETA- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, 8 it has been showedthat millions of wild animal’s populations such as crocodiles or grey bears arebeing killed for their smooth and fashionable fur and skin. The costumers have topay thousands of dollars for a piece of cloth and that money is beingtransferred right into fashion’s company pocket. It is bitter that nobody wouldstand up for animals’ rights rather than enjoy that piece of fur cloth. Moreover, scientists and organizations are using animals for vaccine and drugstesting experiments was showed in “Drug abuse potential evaluation in animals”by Robert L. Balster. It is clear that thereare many different perspectives about this topic. It is reasonable that most ofus do not care much about animals.
As we live on Earth for millions of yearsand we are freely using animals to survive and to live our life. For example, weuse them as food supplies, clothes, entertainment and so on from the beginningof human race. Most of us are not bothering about extinction and animals’rights as it leads to a global issue nowadays. It is obvious thattalking is easier than actual doing. Which leads to numerous reasons which goagainst the statement: “we should stop abusing animals and other creatures”.The “hard part” here is that we have no courage and best technologies to stopusing other animals as implements. Why is it “a hard action”? The reason is thatanimals are the key which keeps us alive. Animals play a crucial role in ourlife which it is still maintaining to be indispensable materials for foods and industries.
In the other words, the human cannot live without others species. Until today, there is no competitor or replacement for animals as most of our resources andtools rely largely on the animals. For example, nowadays, even though there aresome sort of replacements such as artificial meat but it is nothing match tothe originals. Technologies could be elevated and improved for our foodsupplies. In the other hand, for science experiment field, it could be aterribly and dangerously risk for scientists to use humans as the testingsubjects. In reality, it is undeniable that animals could not be replaced byany other forms.
Despite the fact that animals are irreplaceable, we as humanscannot treat animals like rubbish or junk. As it was scientifically proved thatanimals do have emotions like humans which consider them as intelligence andamiable. Which leads to the fact that they have the right to live andexperience life just like humans do.
Humans cannot replace “the food” instantlybut we have the ability to give them a hand and help them. As no more wildanimals will be captured and tortured illegally and they will be protected by thewhole human kinds. Even though there is no excuse for the action of killinganimals but it is reasonable when we grow our own limited kind of “products”for meat as far as they are not endangered species.
The reason is that we canbreed thousands of ordinary pigs or cows together for “meat” but other animalsin wildlife are so rare. From the data of WWF – World Wildlife Fund’s data 9, it has been shownthat if there were 100 million different species on Earth, at least 10 thousandspecies will go extinct every year. So that it is undeniable that we can useanimals for our daily supplies but we have no right to wipe them out of existenceor slaughtered like rubbish. For this part of conclusion, we just use what weneed like “pork, beef, lamp” and so on but we cannot touch the wildlife animals.
As human ourselves have a responsibility to keep on with generating and saving animals’genetic information to prevent the global extinctions of species. It is stillcontroversial that “should we use animals as our tools. In my opinion, it is wrong to use any animals in any kinds of way tomake our life better. But as it was mentioned above, we cannot survive withoutanimals.
To myself, I consider it as a natural thing to use animals for our goods. It is true that we have to fulfill our minimal needs as we must have pork, beeflamp which mean we have kill some animals. Charles Darwin once said: “Itis not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent thatsurvives, it is the one that is most adaptable to change”. It is totallynatural, in the food web it is clear that the predators always eat and use thelower ones for their own goods. It happens the same to us as we – humans arejust adapting to the environment. We need nutrients for living as there areplenty of them in animals’ meat. But we must understand and realize ourlimitation, we cannot kill all animals to fulfill our needs as many company orillegal hunters are slaughtering thousands of wildlife animals. It is toonarrow-minded to think that meat industries are cruel.
In fact, it is a goodthing for all species. As we will have a sustainable source of food which meanwe don’t have to kill other animals anymore. Furthermore, it is an opportunityto keep animals’ genes safe forever. It also will increase the chance forbiodiversity as many good offspring will be born and discovered. About theother fact about zoos or circus which keep animals for entertainment.
That itis not only bringing join for humans but it is also bringing join to animals,as they will interact with many people and stay away from out-law hunters. Moreover,as they will be taught some tricks which leads to a higher education toincrease animals’ intelligence. The only thing that we have to be conscious of andalways fight for is that we have no right to make them suffer a hard and dark lifeas we can’t slaughter them and treat them like rubbish.
We must feel gratefulthat the mother nature giving us the key to survive and to co-existing on thisplanet.
