The world around every individual is perceived through thier own perception. Everyone holds different perspectives that differ from one another. Perspectives are like the system that individuals use to see the world, it is developed by life experiences, ethics, reality, and points of view. Nonetheless, their perception is profoundly influenced and developed by the world that sorrounds. The method that each individual perceives themselves with regarding the rest of the world , impacts the way that they conduct with themselves and around others. Not only that but it also effects thier conviction. It is important to understand this concept of the perception that you hold of the world that is around you , it can deviate from perceiving all things as negative or propitious. The characters from the texts “The Danger of a Single Story”, “Marriage is a Private Affair”, “Things Fall Apart” and “What of a goldfish, Would you Wish?” are from divergent cultures that interpert things in a very contrasting way and their culture outlines the way that they visualize the world and those around them. In the short story “Marriage Is a Private Affair” by Chinua Achebe we see cultures clashing, we witness the way that the protagonists Nene and Nnaemeka overcome the obstacles that intervene their life. One of the biggest obstacles is following cultural traditions. The main character Nnaemeka falls in love with Nene that doesn’t form part of thier tribe, therefore he has the courage to go against his own culture and traditions to follow a more modern path towards his marriage. His father Okeke opposes to the marriage because he is highly influenced by tradition. “I mean it is impossible for me to marry Nweke’s daughter. I don’t love her. Marriage today is different” (Achebe.) Nnaemeka and his father are part of two different generations meaning they have two different perspectives towards marriage, each one of them with a different way of thinking. “Nobody is different. Why should you? He asked. Nothing is different. What one looks in a wife are good character and a Christian background”(Achebe p.29). Okeke tells Nnaemeka thts love doesn’t matter when it comes up to marriage. The only thing that truly matters are the cultural backgrounds of the person. The different perspective that Nnaemeka has towards marriage leads him to leave all the cultural beliefs behind. This culture clashing shapes the story . In “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe Okonkwo’s great fear of some day becoming like his father lazy and not successful shaped him into the way he view the world around him. He desired to be the opposite of his father in every aspect he wanted to be successful and that is what he was. “Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness.” Okonkwo’s fear was able to overcome everything. Okonkwo was viewed as a selfmade man and a well respected man of the clan. Stereotypes classify groups of people. Several of stereotypes are homophobic, racist, and cultural etc. In ” The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimananda Adiche talks about the views of cultures. “But to insist on these negative stories is to flatten my experience and to overlook the many stories that formed me”(Adichie). She believed things because of the things taht have happened to her. She has beliefs based to her personal experiences in her life. “The Single Story creates stereotypes and the problem with stereotypes is that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete” As more of these concepts are made and stereotypes start to shale it is being repeated inside of our heads making us believe what we are told. In “What of the goldfish, would you wish” by Etgar Karet is about a guy named Yoni and his desire of filming the different type of people that live in Israel. He meets a guy name Sergei a Russian man that has beliefs of the people and that is why he is the way he is isolated from everyone. Humans need to learn to receive and interact with others who are incredibly different from ourselves. “One drawn, wizened old lady asked simply for a child” Yoni questions people with this question of what would be the thing that they wish for if they owned a goldfish that had the ability to make thier wishes come true. In conclusion, every individual has thier own perception on the way that they see the world that sorrounds. With everyone holding different perspectives it is up to an individual to the way they behave with themselves.
