The Social Issues of The Progressive Era”Your society’s broken, so who should we blame?” (Iain Banks). There were a significant number of social issues during the Progressive Era. In order to resolve the issues people had to work together. The main social issues of the progressive Era were problematic towards Women’s Rights, Child Protection, and Prohibition.Women’s RIghts in the Progressive Era were limited. “There will never be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.” (Susan B. Anthony). Susan B. Anthony was a leader in the fight for women’s suffrage. This quote means that women were never really equal to men unless they had the same high job positions and careers as them. Susan’s quote is important because most colleges refused to accept women, urging them to make women’s colleges. Many male-dominated professions opened to women as the result of the advanced degrees. “Our religion, laws, and customs are all founded on the belief that woman was made for man” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton). Elizabeth was an American suffragist and a leading figure of the early women’s rights movement. This quote means that most of their society believed that a woman wasn’t able to do what a man did. They believed that women were to be “happy housewives”. Before the Civil War, women were supposed to be housewives and mothers. When they finally ot jobs, they got paid 50% lower than a man. The rights of women were very unjust.Child Labor was very unhealthy and dangerous. “Children should have pens in their hands, not tools” (Iqbal Masih). This quote means that children do not need to be knowing about work at such a young age. They should be going to school and having fun while they have the time. Businesses hired children because they they performed unskilled jobs for lower wages and because children’s small hands made them more adept at handling small parts and tools. Children worked to help their struggling families and people took advantage of them. “Children who work a job lose a precious time of their lives” (Quote Academy). This quote means that kids were basically working all the way until they were basically adults. They didn’t get to enjoy their childhoods. Immigrants and rural migrants often sent their children to work because they viewed them as part of the family economy. Children were very prone to accidents caused by fatigue. Child Labor was a very harmful thing. The temperance movement lead up to prohibition. The temperance movement had been active and influential in the United States around the 1830s. Temperance advocates did not always emphasize prohibiting the use of alcohol. By the late 19th century, they did though. The prohibition movement achieved initial successes at state levels and also local levels. It was successful mostly in the southern and western states. Not so successful in urban states. Later on, prohibition was a national movement. Prohibition presented many of the characteristics of the Progressive EraAlthough the Progressive Era had Economic Reform, Fostering efficiency, and Promoting moral improvement, I focused on Protecting social welfare. The Progressive Era improved in many areas like living conditions, working a child, and letting women have their rights. They may not have achieved everything they wanted but overall they changed a lot of things. I say this to say “The main social issues of the Progressive Era were problematic towards Women’s RIghts, Child Protection, and Prohibition”.
