Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems,
and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral
values. Many religions have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred
histories that are intended to give meaning to life or to explain the origin of
life or the universe. Belief is a state of the mind when we consider something
true even though we are not sure or able to prove it. Everybody has beliefs
about life and the world they experience. Everyone has the right to freedom of
thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his
religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and
in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice,
worship and observance.

Influence of belief can be promoted in many different areas
of health and social care settings. For example, in a care home. For example,
providing active support consistent with the beliefs, culture and preferences
of the individuals. Active support means helping the individual as much as
possible and taking their beliefs, culture and preferences into account when
making decisions in health and social care settings.  For example; an individual in the care home is
a Muslim the care workers will need to make sure that halal meat is available
on the menu and that they can have an area where they can pray. Providing
active support consistent with beliefs, culture and preferences needs to be
taken into consideration so that the service user is not taken away from their
beliefs.

Dealing with conflict

Difficulty and example of how to overcome the difficulty

An example of difficulty when dealing with a service user may
be that the professional may be having a lack of knowledge about the traditions
and ways that each culture follows. For example, a service user attending the
health because she has knee pain. The service user comes from a strict culture
and as per her traditions she needs to wear something over her face as her
tradition states that she should not be seen by anyone else than her husband. However,
because of the lack of knowledge the doctor may have about this he goes on to
examine her by lifting up her veil from the face, noticing this her husband
gets angry and start to shout at the doctor and stop him from examining the
patient. Due to this the professional will not be able to give the right treatment
to the service user.
