Phaseolus vulgaris, also known as green bean, kidney bean or common beanis an herbaceous twelve-month, climbing or sub-erect plant in the Fabaceae thatoriginated in Central and South America. The major types of commercially-grownbean are navy bean, wax bean and runner bean.
The leaf can be used as avegetable, and the straw can be used for fodder. Most of the members in Phaseolus species acquire nitrogenthrough an association with rhizobia, which is the bacteria which plays role innitrogen fixation. Common beans are consumed and grown throughout theworld. It is the dominant staple food in the low to altitudes of Americans formillennia.
Common beans are the primary source of protein in diets in countrieslike Mexico and Brazil (Broughton et al.,2003). Although there are thousands of legume species, common beans are the most popular among other. Parts of the common bean whichcan be eaten are green pods, mature beans and shell beans.
There are few reasons why common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) should be sequenced. This is because common bean provides rich dietary of proteins, minerals anddietary fiber. Common beans play an important role in dietary antioxidants(Beninger and Hosfield,2003). Seed coat color affects the nutraceutical compoundscontent, they rich in anthocyanins, polyphenols and flavonoids whichhave the antioxidant capacity(Chávez-Mendozaand Sánchez, 2017). Common beanextract also found out that they produce significant decrements in body weightand fat mass(Celleno et al., 2007).
Commonbean also contains nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as iron, magnesium, zinc, iodine and starch. Common beans supply complex carbohydrate and fiber tothe diet, yet are low in fat and sodium and does not contain cholesterol(Geil and Anderson, 1994). The yields ofcommon beans are low and the quality of their seed proteins is sub-optimal.This is because of the drought stress caused by climate change especially inAfrica(Darkwa et al., 2016).
Therefore, Phaseolus vulgaris is a very important bean for study in genomics. The production of Phaseolusvulgaris is high in Latin America and Africa but the yield is low due tosome environment factors such as humidity level and conductive for thedevelopment of pathogen(N et al., 2017). Low soil phosphorus level also will decrease thedevelopment of common beans. Low soil phosphorus has been identified to be oneof the factors that cause low bean grain yield(Mourice and Tryphone,2012).
