Pestalozzi was a Swiss teacher and educational reformer.
He was born January 12th, 1746 in Zürich, Switzerland and died February 17th, 1827. He was a clergyman like his grandfather, then a Politician and a Farmer. He then used his past experiences and focused on education. Pestalozzi was motivated to help educate poor children after witnessing the severe poverty and conditions of children working in factories during his time as a clergyman. Pestalozzi then created a school called Neuhof for poor children, the school was created on his farm. The school was successful but was shut down because of financial issues. Pestalozzi was influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s ideas and created the school to educate poor students and give them a way to get out of poverty. After reflecting on the practices of the Neuhof, Pestalozzi developed what is now known as the Pestalozzi method.
(Ngo Manh Lam Ngo Manh Lam, 2015) The Pestalozzi method is a whole child approach which states that development should involve all aspects of a child. Schools tend to just focus on intellectual development and forget about emotional development. Pestalozzi’s method is used to change this. Pestalozzi believed that children learn naturally from experiences and that teachers should use direct experiences to unlock their knowledge. ” Pestalozzi viewed development as a natural unfolding or blossoming from within, with teachers acting as gardeners who nurture the process rather than direct it.
” (Bredekamp, p. 43) Pestalozzi also believed that education should be centered around the child and not curriculum. (Silber, 2016) Pestalozzi wrote many books some of his known books are “The Evening Hour of a Hermit” in 1780, Leonard and Gertrude in 1801, and How Gertrude Teaches Her Children in 1801. (Silber, 2016) Teachers should let children discover answers themselves through play and experiences.
The classroom should feel like a family, it should be compassionate, kind and loving. One of Pestalozzi’s innovative ideas was that students should not be grouped by age but should be grouped by ability. Pestalozzi had a large impact on education, he believed that children learn best through experiences. Today, educators still use his ideas to help students learn through experiences, teachers used to teach students by giving them information and not giving them experiences they need to learn. Pestalozzi also believed that students learn naturally, this is important because teachers learned that students will learn on their own and that their job is to help the student learn on their own. (New World Encyclopedia, 2015) Pestalozzi saw a vision of education where teachers educate the whole child and have a balance of intelligence, moral education, and physical education.
This vision is still involved in education and is a goal for all schools. One of his ideas which motivated teachers the most was his idea of classrooms feeling like a family. This idea is the key to education because you can’t educate a student without having a caring relationship with them first. Pestalozzi also impacted teaching standards and the evidence of his ideas are still seen today. The fourth D.A.
P principle states “Development and learning result from an interaction of maturation and experience.” (“12 Principles” n.d) Pestalozzi was a huge advocate for student learning through experience, it is the natural way we learn. An infant learns naturally by experiencing things such as figuring what an object is by tasting and touching it. We learn through exploration. Another standard which Pestalozzi impacted was the standard I-1.
5 which states “I-1.5—To create and maintain safe and healthy settings that foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and that respect their dignity and their contributions.” (“Ohio Standards”, n.d) Pestalozzi’s goal was to make classrooms feel like a family. A family which is caring and loving. Pestalozzi also knew about educating the whole child, not just intelligence, but also emotionally and physically.
The first standard of the Ohio Standards for the Teacher Profession (O.S.T.P.
) states “Teachers understand student learning and development and respect the diversity of the students they teach.” (“Ohio Standards”, n.d) Pestalozzi firmly believed that all students can learn and he knew what to do to help them. Teachers now still need to believe that all students can learn. When the teacher does not believe a student can learn, then the student will not learn.
Teachers still use Pestalozzi’s ideas in classrooms. Through research, I learned that students learn naturally and that teachers should not direct exactly what students learn. Students need to have time to explore and find answers on their own by using their experiences. When I become a teacher, I will allow students to explore and learn naturally. I will give students experiences to nurture their learning process, instead of giving them information and directing their learning.
