For my assignment, I read the S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) manifesto. Originally written by Valerie Solanas in 1967, Solanas argues within scum that men are a weak and incomplete gender that are slowly ruining the world, and that it was in the hands of females to eventually wipe out the entire gender, as there had been enough scientific advancements for babies to be born in a non traditional manner, without the need of men.
The manifesto was written during the time of second wave feminism, which was focused on tackling a wide array of issues such as sexuality, de facto inequalities, rape culture, reproductive rights, and others. SCUM manifesto itself references a list of grievances that Solanas feels towards men, including, but not limited to: war, conformity, money, marriage, prostitution, prejudice, and social class.
SCUM is written in a sort of dramatic and hard-hitting form. Often described as irreverent by critics, Solanas fights with anger described as “articulated bald female rage” by Janet Lyon, an Associate Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Penn State. Because of the rather abrasive tone, readers of SCUM either interpret Solanas as unadulterated genius, or as a crazy feminist. Although the pieces of actual insight in SCUM are interesting, these messages are often overpowered by the aforementioned rage. Solanas is able to write the concept for her utopian vision but also fails to explain how one society would manage to achieve this.
Solanas uses interesting imagery in SCUM, often at times reducing both sexes (male and female, in this case) to bare bones, animalistic tendencies.  However, in the beginning of the manifesto she does blatantly state that men are “non human”, “half dead”, and that “He the male is trapped in a twilight zone halfway between human and ape.” (4)
