More and more people whose gender identity is different than their assigned sex are speaking up to defend their right of fair treatment in society since they are discriminated by the legislative system and suffer from economic inequality. In order for global leaders to tackle this problem, they should take into consideration the predisposition of humankind to fear the different and how this has a major impact on the economic challenges that transgender people face. It is also vital for them to be able to effectively negotiate the implementation of social policies with the opposing parties in their countries, which will facilitate the passing of non discrimination laws. The basics of the discrimination and hostility that people with a different gender identity are subjected to in all aspects of life result from the tendency to be more judgemental towards those who are not the same as us. The negative attitude comprises of stereotypes, harassment and social isolation and is summed up by the term transphobia. The effect of this can be directly observed in the economic issues that transgender people are more likely to have. The rates of unemployment and poverty among this group are significantly higher. According to a survey of the The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, 38% of single transgender people ages 18-64 are poor, in comparison to 14% of the general population. This can be changed by encouraging more companies to employ people who are transitioning from their sex assigned at birth and taking effective measures against the employers who fail to hire people regardless of their gender identity. Leaders should be also aware of the wage gap that already exists between men and women, and that is even more likely to occur between transgender employees and their female or male colleagues. Creating an environment that allows transgender people to be equal participants in the working world is essential for them to start integrating as people with the same value as all others. Fighting discriminatory practices also requires leaders to understand the emotional pain inflicted on transgender people from living in a society which does not care for them. Misconceptions and prejudice cannot be uprooted at once, but they can start getting gradually destroyed by making regulations that prevent employers from putting transgender people in an economically vulnerable state. As societies are still divided about the legal recognition of being transgender, global leaders should use the power of rhetorics to address the issue in the political climate of their country so that they fight opposition and create social policies that protect those people and give them equal rights. The combined efforts of multiple ministries are needed for the life improvement of transgender people as they are likely to experience unfair treatment in a number of spheres such as the health sector and the general access to goods and services. Leaders should be able to unite their governments in order to work towards the introduction of new social policies that ensure that transgender people have the same opportunities in life . In order to have laws and reforms that truly address the needs of those with a different gender identity, politicians should collaborate with the civil society. This way the state will be viewed as a partner to transgender people rather than an enemy that further worsens their lives by limiting them. An insight into the legislation of the country is of major importance to resolve the issue with the disadvantages that transgender people experience as outlawing discrimination is arguably the most effective way to do this. Protecting gender identity in the highest legal text, the Constitution, should be a goal for all leaders to achieve on the path of dealing with discrimination, which was actually done in Malta in 2014.The work of global leaders towards resolving the problems of the transgender citizens requires understanding of the political steps that need to be taken so that the government of the country is united around the mission to improve their lives, much of which is a matter of reforms in jurisdiction. The unfavorable situation of transgender people is a complex issue that has to be viewed through several lenses in order to come up with a solution that addresses all aspects of it. A psychological background is valuable in terms of giving leaders an insight into the human mind and all the factors that lead to transgender people being outcasts in society. This understanding helps to better trace the causes of the economic disparity of those with a different gender identity. Being economically competent enables leaders to search for ways to address the situation in their communication with businesses. Provided that they have the right political tribune, leaders can introduce changes within the country not only in people’s minds, but also in the legislative system, which will most certainly result in better future for transgender people.
