iPTF14hls was one of the most remarkable supernova one detected by a telescope in San Diego. This was a type II-P supernova, which is the most common supernova that scientist have discovered. This exact supernova grew brighter and dimmer over the span of more than two years. At first Arcavi, a scientist at University of California Santa Barbara, he thought it might just be a local star in our galaxy.
Many stars in our galaxy are known to have shifting brightness.Zheng Chuen Wong, who was working for Arcavi in the winter, noticed that the object had become flashing the past five months. Arcavi and Wong both think that this is very strange for a supernova. He thought that this was a normals star in our galaxy that was just closer to us which made it seem much bigger than other stars. But this was 500 light-years away from Earth. It became more mysterious, after 100 days the supernova only looked 30 days old. They both stated that ” Two years later, the supernova’s spectrum still looked the way it would if the explosion were only 60 days old. The supernova recently emerged from behind Earth’s sun, and Arcavi said it’s still bright, after roughly three years.
” A couple years later the object started to fade out. Summary:At first, Arcavi thought it might be a local star in our galaxy, which would appear brighter because it was closer, he said. Many stars are also known to have variable brightness. But the light signature revealed that the object was indeed located in a small, irregular galaxy about 500 million light-years from Earth.
And the object only got weirder. After 100 days, the supernova looked just 30 days old. Two years later, the supernova’s spectrum still looked the way it would if the explosion were only 60 days old. The supernova recently emerged from behind Earth’s sun, and Arcavi said it’s still bright, after roughly three years. But at one one-hundredth of its peak brightness, the object appears to finally be fading out.
The supernova may fade out; it may grow brighter, or it may suddenly disappear. I picked this articles because it really caught my attention when the article title was Scientist discover a star that will not die. This is important to our society because supernovas can briefly outshine entire galaxies and radiate more energy than our sun will in its entire lifetime. Two questions I had when reading this article was that if this could possibly explode and kill people. Also, I was wondering why this exact supernova was the biggest and why this one isn’t the same size as all supernova’s.
