United Nation defines violence against women as any act of gender based
violence that results in or is likely to result in physical, sexual, or mental
harm or suffering to women including threat of such acts, coercion or arbitrary
deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life”.
Ameliorating domestic violence against women is going to the collaboration of
everyone, starting from the individual level, to the community, the religious
setting and the government everyone has a role to play to solve this problem. .
STEPS TO BE TAKEN TO AMELIORATE
there is no clear cut solution to ameliorate domestic violence against women in
Nigeria below are some ways it can be reduce:
SENSITIZATION AT THE INDIVIDUAL
your situation: individual who are facing domestic violence should admit to
themselves that they are being abused and are in abusive relationship or
marriage. Some women don’t even accept that they are in an abusive
relationship, they feel when their husband abuses that it’s their fault and
they must have done something wrong to deserve it. So it is very necessary for
victims to accept that they are in an abusive relationship. Victims to be made
aware to know the signs of when they are in an abusive relationship
the silence and speak up: women who are
in an abusive relationship should learn to speak up and not keep quiet and
remain in abusive relationship until they probably lose the life. Its only when
victims are able to speak up that they can be helped. When the society does not
know that you are going through domestic violence they cannot help you. They
need to be told that they are laws that protect them against domestic violence.
SENSITIZATION AT THE COMMUNITY
society need to be aware that domestic violence is not right or acceptable
under any circumstance. We also need change the way viewed marriage that the woman
is always to blame for the failure or the success of am marriage and so much
pressure is place on her to ensure the success of her marriage that even when
she is being abused in her marriage she does not want to leave or speak out so
as to avoid stigmatization. Most men knowing that their wives would not want to
leave the marriage so as not to be term a failure will use the opportunity to
continue to abuse the woman. A man should not be encourage that he is allowed
to beat up his wife if she does something wrong. We should understand that ‘it
takes two to tango’ especially in marriage.
SENSITIZATION AT THE RELIGIOUS LEVEL
lot of people especially in the religious setting view divorce as sin and even
in the most bizarre situation you are not supposed to divorce or leave your
husband. In our society our religion has overshadow proper thinking and so we
forget that the foundation that Christ laid for us is love and love does not
accommodate violence. A Christian should be made to understand domestic
violence is anti-scriptural because Christ model for family is love for one
another and love can never be displayed through domestic violence. We should
not wait until people lose their lives before we take action. A Christian
should be able to seek away from a marriage where there is threat of life
ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP CURB
Implementation of laws against
domestic violence: “On May 25th 2015 the Violence against
Persons (Prohibition) act was signed into law to help curb violence”. The
police need to be properly trained to handle case of domestic violence. Firm
punishment should be given to domestic violence offenders. There is need for
institutional or organizational support to help women of domestic violence.
Help victims to be economically
who are not economically independent can be introduced into skills acquisition
program such as tailoring, bead making, bag making, decoration, baking and
others to help them acquire skills that will help them to economically
independent. Soft loans can also be provided for them by the government to help
them start up their business. This is important because most victims of
domestic violence have no source income that why they remain in abusive
marriages. Also poverty has being found out to be one the of the root causes
domestic violence, a man can start beaten when he is economically stressed out
and so takes out his anger on his wife.
ROLE OF HEALTH PROMOTERS TO HELP
CURB DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
promoters need to create more awareness on the evil of domestic violence on how
it affects not only the woman but the children and even the society at large.
Also more research needs to be carried out the causes of domestic in the
society so as understand and find better ways to stop domestic violence. As
health promoters our focus is on preventive measures and I feel we should focus
more on finding out the root cause and find ways to prevent domestic violence
from occurring at all.
WAYS OF ASSISTING VICTIMS OF
should be provided for victims of domestic violence to help them heal
psychologically and emotionally. In the case of Dr Perputual ,Mbanefo she found
out despite trying over and over again on her parents orders to make her
marriage work, the psychological impact of the abuse meant that could no longer
any king of intimacy with husband. Victims need help to be able to overcome the
psychological impact of being abused.
Creation of support group system
is need to create support group system to help victims of domestic violence.
This can go a longer way to victims when they know they have people who can
support them and they are not in this world even when their families sometimes
choose not to support them. Just like the case of Mbanefo she did not have the
support of her family but she was able to Hope house a small shelter for
domestic violence. We need more across the whole of Nigeria to help more
victims of domestic violence.
Provide appropriate care
of domestic violence need to be shown appropriate care. They should be taken to
the hospital and treated accordingly. They need to be shown love and care and
know they are not blame. We should not judge them but rather talk to them
gently and kindly.
Document women’s condition
victims of domestic violence are taking to the hospital there is need for us to
ensure that when they are being screened it will be documented well for when it
will be needed in court to help persecute perpetrators of domestic violence.
Risk assessment and development of
risk assessment should when a victim of domestic violence seeks for help. We
need to find out if the person will be safe when she goes back home or if there
is need to help victim develop a safety plan.
Inform women of their right
of domestic violence need to be informed that they have right and that they can
be protected. We can also help refer to appropriate authorities that will help
them get justice for what has being done to them.
