Some women don’t even accept that they are in an abusiverelationship, they feel when their husband abuses that it’s their fault andthey must have done something wrong to deserve it.

So it is very necessary forvictims to accept that they are in an abusive relationship. We also need change the way viewed marriage that the womanis always to blame for the failure or the success of am marriage and so muchpressure is place on her to ensure the success of her marriage that even whenshe is being abused in her marriage she does not want to leave or speak out soas to avoid stigmatization. Most men knowing that their wives would not want toleave the marriage so as not to be term a failure will use the opportunity tocontinue to abuse the woman. A man should not be encourage that he is allowedto beat up his wife if she does something wrong. We should understand that ‘ittakes two to tango’ especially in marriage.SENSITIZATION AT THE RELIGIOUS LEVEL         Alot of people especially in the religious setting view divorce as sin and evenin the most bizarre situation you are not supposed to divorce or leave yourhusband. In our society our religion has overshadow proper thinking and so weforget that the foundation that Christ laid for us is love and love does notaccommodate violence. A Christian should be made to understand domesticviolence is anti-scriptural because Christ model for family is love for oneanother and love can never be displayed through domestic violence. We shouldnot wait until people lose their lives before we take action.

A Christianshould be able to seek away from a marriage where there is threat of lifeROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP CURBDOMESTIC VIOLENCEImplementation of laws againstdomestic violence: “On May 25th 2015 the Violence againstPersons (Prohibition) act was signed into law to help curb violence”. Thepolice need to be properly trained to handle case of domestic violence. Firmpunishment should be given to domestic violence offenders. There is need forinstitutional or organizational support to help women of domestic violence.Help victims to be economicallyindependent.Victimswho are not economically independent can be introduced into skills acquisitionprogram such as tailoring, bead making, bag making, decoration, baking andothers to help them acquire skills that will help them to economicallyindependent.

Soft loans can also be provided for them by the government to helpthem start up their business. This is important because most victims ofdomestic violence have no source income that why they remain in abusivemarriages. Also poverty has being found out to be one the of the root causesdomestic violence, a man can start beaten when he is economically stressed outand so takes out his anger on his wife. ROLE OF HEALTH PROMOTERS TO HELPCURB DOMESTIC VIOLENCEHealthpromoters need to create more awareness on the evil of domestic violence on howit affects not only the woman but the children and even the society at large. Also more research needs to be carried out the causes of domestic in thesociety so as understand and find better ways to stop domestic violence.

Ashealth promoters our focus is on preventive measures and I feel we should focusmore on finding out the root cause and find ways to prevent domestic violencefrom occurring at all. WAYS OF ASSISTING VICTIMS OFVIOLENCECounselingCounselingshould be provided for victims of domestic violence to help them healpsychologically and emotionally. In the case of Dr Perputual ,Mbanefo she foundout despite trying over and over again on her parents orders to make hermarriage work, the psychological impact of the abuse meant that could no longerany king of intimacy with husband. Victims need help to be able to overcome thepsychological impact of being abused.  Creation of support group systemThereis need to create support group system to help victims of domestic violence. This can go a longer way to victims when they know they have people who cansupport them and they are not in this world even when their families sometimeschoose not to support them. Just like the case of Mbanefo she did not have thesupport of her family but she was able to Hope house a small shelter fordomestic violence.

We need more across the whole of Nigeria to help morevictims of domestic violence.Provide appropriate care Victimsof domestic violence need to be shown appropriate care. They should be taken tothe hospital and treated accordingly.

They need to be shown love and care andknow they are not blame. We should not judge them but rather talk to themgently and kindly. Document women’s condition Whenvictims of domestic violence are taking to the hospital there is need for us toensure that when they are being screened it will be documented well for when itwill be needed in court to help persecute perpetrators of domestic violence.

Risk assessment and development ofsafety planArisk assessment should when a victim of domestic violence seeks for help. Weneed to find out if the person will be safe when she goes back home or if thereis need to help victim develop a safety plan.Inform women of their right Victimsof domestic violence need to be informed that they have right and that they canbe protected. We can also help refer to appropriate authorities that will helpthem get justice for what has being done to them.
