Imagine you lived in a time not so long ago where the modern technology we use today did not exist, now imagine you were the very first person to create what can be considered a computer, only for someone else to create an even better computer not too long after, and than someone makes an even better computer than them and so on and so on. That is the kind of constant advances and continuous 1 up manships that happens all the time in the world we live in today.Technology refers to many different things in our modern day world, most every person in the world uses some kind of technology everyday, like our phones, computers, and whatever mode of transportation you use to get from where you are and where you need to go, like our cars. Our cars are a great example of the changes in technology over the years. The first vehicle considered to be what we classify as a car was created by a German engineer named Karl Benz, Karl Benz who was born in november of 1844 and died in april of 1929 created the first practical automobile in 1885 called the Benz patent motor car. It was a simpler version of the cars we used today, having no top or sides and looking more like a carriage than a car, it had costed around 150 U.S.
dollars which would be around 4086 dollars today. It was a three wheeled automobile and used a 954cc single cylinder four stroke engine and had a maximum speed of approximately 16 km per hour. Over the years cars were made to go faster at the cost of being very bad for the environment, and now as we become more and more environmentally conscience so are our cars as companies come out with environmentally friendly cars we look back at the older versions of cars and see just how bad they were for the environment and think about how our cars will advance in the future. Nowadays people don’t need to get around anymore, with the various different ways we can contact each other and talk to them without having to be face to face, but like most things it was not always like that. It was 1943 and development of the first general purpose electronic computer had started, the computer was called E.
N.I.A.C. which stood for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer and came out of development in 1946.
A.C. was invented by John William Mauchly and John Presper and was made from 18000 vacuum tubes, occupied 1800 square feet, and weighed 50 tons. E.N.
I.A.C. was the turning point for the modern technology used today and is considered the first modern computer but the people who created E.N.
(John Presper and John William Mauchly) were not the first people to have thought of the concept of the modern day computer, that prize goes to Charles Babbage who is credited with making the first mechanical computer. He originated the idea of a programmable computer and the main ideas found in a modern day computer can be found in Babbage’s Analytical engine. Charles Babbage was a mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer he was born in dec 1791 in london and died in october of 1871. Charles Babbage went to cambridge university and was fascinated with supernatural activity, he was the top of his class but graduated with no honours because he defended a thesis that was considered blasphemous. In the end Charles Babbage has been credited with being the “Father of computers” and his inventions will be remembered as the start of modern day computers. The internet is also a advanced form of technology that we use on a daily basis. The internet is constantly getting faster and getting hold of more information, now because of the internet we have all of that information just sitting in our pockets through our phones. Our phones have also changed a lot over the last few years, they have gone from big heavy things that did what phones were built to do, make phone calls, to what they are today, pocket sized, touch screen, and with the ability to play games and access more information than one single person can learn in a lifetime.
Our phones are also able to do so many other things than what we started out with other than just games and the internet, our phones can take pictures and videos, play music, and use social media so that we can always talk to each other without actually talking to anyone. Some people say though that this is more harmful than it is helpful because people are not getting the full interactions that we would get from talking in person. Overall, all of our lives have been affected by technology in some way, and over many years technology has changed the world that we live in today, through electric cars that help save the environment, to the phones in your pockets being able to contact a person halfway across the world while also being able always keep in touch with a childhood friend. Technology has come all this way and I can’t wait to see how it changes in the future.
