I believe that people can develop eating disorders for various reasons. Some reasons may be due to their poor body image , others may have low self esteem and some people may be battling other emotional issues that cause them to have an eating disorder. I also firmly believe that the media can play a huge part into the rise of anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorders.
One reason a person can develop an eating disorder is when that person has a negative body image of themselves, which means that that do not like what they see when they look in the mirror. Because most models in magazines, television and social media are extremely thin, unfortunately, that is the image that stays in most people’s heads. Everyday people see these models and want nothing more than to look just like them. Many photographs are airbrushed so that no imperfections are shown on the body. Also, these models usually either eat very minimally and/or exercise constantly. “Models seem to be suffering the brunt of the fashion industry’s obsession with size zero, according to a new study carried out by the Model Health Inquiry. The study indicates that as many as 40% of models may currently be suffering from some kind of eating disorder.
“(Nordqvist, Eating Disorders Among Fashion Models Rising). Another reason that a person can develop an eating disorder is because they may have very low self esteem. When they don’t feel good enough to complete certain tasks because their self esteem is low it can lead to many problems, one of them can be suffering from an eating disorder. “We all have times when we lack confidence and don’t feel good about ourselves. But when low self-esteem becomes a long-term problem, it can have a harmful effect on our mental health and our lives.”(NHS Choices, Raising low-self esteem) When people have a positive attitude then they can deal with life’s challenges better than when they are having a negative attitude.
I know that in my own life, I struggle sometimes with having lower self esteem. It is helpful to fight those feelings about yourself and focus on what you know you do well. Finally, another reason that a person may suffer from an eating disorder could be because they may have other issues, possibly struggles with mental health. A person may have suffered a trauma, such a rape or abuse that can cause any of the three eating disorders.
“Traumatic experiences, especially those involving interpersonal violencesuch as sexual assault, have been found to be a significant risk factor for the development of a variety of psychiatric disorders, including eating disorders, particularly those characterized by bulimic symptoms, such as binge eating and purging,” says Dr. Timothy Breweton, an expert in the field of trauma and eating disorders.”(NEDA, Trauma, Sexual Assault and Eating Disorders) In these types of situations, the eating disorder becomes an easier way to cope with the horrible thing that has happened in the past. In ending, there are many ways for eating disorders to begin.
Poor body image, low self esteem or various mental issues resulting from a trauma are the three that I discussed in this essay. Although the media can not be solely held responsible for this, I strongly feel that the images shown daily of models being super thin play a huge role in people becoming anorexic.
