Have you ever wondered what was better for you, coffee or tea? In this paper I will go over all the health benefits and problems with both tea and coffee to help to decide what I believe to be better for the human body to consume.
There are many different types of tea in the world that a person can choose from. In this paper I will go over as many types of tea as possible to convey the true amount of health benefits tea can have on a person. Overall, tea has less caffeine, than coffee and it is proven that tea is good for the heart and might reduce cancer. Also, different types of tea contain different types of antioxidants. It has also been shown that tea may boost the immune system after injuries and illness. Also, if you are watching your weight, tea is calorie free as well as hydrating to the body (even with the caffeine). The first types of tea I will discuss are green, black, and white tea.
These teas are derived from the plant called Camellia sinensis, and it contains some unique antioxidants. One of these antioxidants is known as ECGC. This particular antioxidant helps reduce the chance of cancer, heart disease, and clogged arteries. These teas also contain some caffeine that helps heighten mental alertness. Green tea in particular helps burn fat, reduce stress and reduce the chance of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Green tea also reduces the risk of stroke and lowers cholesterol levels. Also, green tea has been found to improve bone density. Black tea has the highest levels of caffeine and studies have shown that black tea can reduce the damage to lungs caused by smoking. The second types of tea I will discuss are herbal teas.
In particular chamomile tea may help prevent complications associated with diabetes because of the antioxidants it contains. Also Rooibos tea has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer. Even though tea has many health benefits to drinking it it also has some downsides as well. The first one being the caffeine.
Even though there is less caffeine in teas than there is in coffee for some people who are sensitive to caffeine tea still has enough caffeine to keep you up for hours. Also, if you drink too much tea it has been shown to cause kidney damage. In a 2013 study done by the Journal of Toxicology it was found that 30 types of tea have high levels of heavy metals including lead, aluminium, and cadmium. In another study done it was found that some teas have elevated levels of fluoride. When people think of coffee the first thing that tends to come to mind is all the caffeine in it. What people do not know is the rest of the health benefits and problems that come with drinking coffee. One benefit from drinking coffee is the decrease in risk of getting Parkinson’s disease. In Italy it was found that drinking coffee lowers your risk of liver cancer by 40%.
Also drinking coffee lowers your risk of heart failure. Because of the caffeine in coffee it does elevate your energy levels. Another benefit of drinking coffee is that it contains vital nutrients, for example, riboflavin and potassium. Finally, coffee contains the most antioxidants than anything else in western society. Even though coffee has benefits to it does not mean there are no risks as well.
One of these risks is that a high consumption of unfiltered coffee leads to higher cholesterol levels. Also, in some people, coffee has shown to increase heart disease instead of decreasing it. Coffee affects iron absorption. This means that drinking coffee decrease the amount of iron the body absorbs. It also decreases the amount of calcium, magnesium and zinc that our kidneys can absorb from our diet. Finally, drinking coffee releases the hormones cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine which are the stress hormones.
This paper has shown that both tea and coffee have many health benefits and also many risks associated with drinking them. I believe that it is up to you to decide what you think is best for you and also what you think the better health benefits of both tea and coffee and come to your own conclusion about which is better for you.
