Beneficial choice compared to chemical pesticides (Mother Earth News,

Beneficial insects are a resource to
use against insect pest in the garden (Mother Earth News, n.d.). There are ways to
manage these insects and one of the ways is to follow the Intergraded Pest
Management program (IPM, n.d.). Within the IPM is a
prevention step and this step can include attracting, buying, and raising
beneficial insects (IPM, n.d.). Managing beneficial
insects is a healthier choice compared to chemical pesticides (Mother Earth
News, n.d.).

                Beneficial
insects have three categories (Fugate, 2012). The are pollinators,
predators, and parasites (Fugate, 2012). Honeybees are an
example of the beneficial pollinator insects. An aphid eating ladybug is an
example of the beneficial predator insect (Fugate, 2012). The braconid wasp
that injects her eggs under a hornworm skin is an example of a beneficial parasite
insect (Gray, n.d.). These insects bring
biodiversity to the garden (Mother Earth News, n.d.).

                One
of the things that brings trouble to the beneficial insects is chemical
pesticides (Vinje, The Effect of Pesticides
on Beneficial Insects, n.d.). Chemical pesticides
not only kill the pest, but also kills the beneficial insects, soil microbes,
and nematodes (Vinje, The Effect of Pesticides
on Beneficial Insects, n.d.). Humans also have
health risks when exposed to chemical pesticides (Lorenz, 2017). Chemical pesticides
can enter the body by skin, eyes, mouth, and lungs (Lorenz, 2017). Some of the symptoms
are wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, coma, and death (Lorenz, 2017). There are different
chemical pesticides and cause different symptoms compared to others (Lorenz, 2017). One type of pesticide
that is a natural insect control that is made from soil-borne bacteria called
Bt (Bacillus thuringinsis) (Vinje, n.d.). This type of
pesticide is doesn’t harm humans, beneficial insects, or animals (Vinje,
Bacillus thuringiensis Products, n.d.). A toxic crystal
that is in the spore of the bacteria disrupts the pest stomach and kills the
pest (Vinje, Bacillus thuringiensis
Products, n.d.).
There are different Bt sprays for different targeted insect pest (Vinje,
Bacillus thuringiensis Products, n.d.).

                The
Integrated Pest Management consists of steps to follow and depending on which
you use, will depend on the number of steps (IPM, n.d.). Environment
Protection Agency has four steps (IPM, n.d.). The four steps are actions
threshold, identify and monitor, prevention, and control (IPM, n.d.). Using IMP helps
with focusing on pest prevention and only uses pesticides as needed (IPM, n.d.). The IPM can be used
for agriculture and non-agriculture (ex. garden) (IPM, n.d.).

                There
are three ways to bring beneficial insects into the garden. The ways are
buying, attracting, and raising. Ordering online is an option to buying beneficial
insects. Arbico Organics has many beneficial insects to choose from and they
give instructions on how to care for and release (Beneficial
Insects – Generalists, n.d.). Raising insects,
for example ladybugs, need to have a net tent structure with holes where larvae
and adults can’t fit through (Saffell, n.d.). The ladybugs would
also need enough flying space, food (ex. wheast), suitable temperature, and
water (Saffell, n.d.). The ways to attract
beneficial insects are with plants, fountain, and food like wheast (Hoffman,
2014) (Hadley, 2017). Plants not only attract
them, but also provide other food and shelter (Hoffman, 2014).

                Using
chemical pesticides not only kills beneficial insects, but can cause major
symptoms to humans or even death (Vinje, The Effect of Pesticides
on Beneficial Insects, n.d.) (Lorenz, 2017). Bt spray is another
alternative to chemical pesticides (Vinje, Bacillus thuringiensis
Products, n.d.).
IPM steps try to prevent the use of targeted or non-specific pesticides (IPM, n.d.). Whether it is using
a combination or choosing just one of the ways to prevent insect pest, beneficial
insects bring biodiversity and are garden allies (Cedar Circle
Farm, n.d.) (Mother Earth
News, n.d.).
