An Educational Doctorate (Ed.D) is a terminal degree that focuses on applying foundational knowledge and research to organizations, leadership and educational best practices within the real world. Ed.D programs prepare individuals that embark on the program with academic, administrative and research experiences to work in elementary, middle, high school and higher educational institutions. Terminal degree candidates use current research to create and implement finding of an issue they hold dear to them.
These findings lead to improvements in educational practices within the area of study. Aside from completing coursework students are required to complete a dissertation about a desired field of study. The dissertation is written by developing theories surrounding previous studies and practices in a topic of interest. When an individual embarks on the journey of pursuing an Ed.D it is important to write philosophy of learning, personal and professional goals statements, as this will serve as the foundation for all coursework that is to follow. Goal Statement OneI am interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership (Ed.
D.). This program will enable me to enhance my career in the field of education. Based on the American College of Education (2016) Program Outcomes, the Ed.D program will give me the opportunity to develop my technology skills, think critically and be creative about educational practices. I will have the opportunity to collaborate and contribute to evidence-based research with colleagues. The value an Ed.D program can bring include professional prestige, confidence, and career opportunities, contributions to research, changing policies and procedures, promotion of best practices in leadership, and develop technology skills.
When direct and indirect measurements are analyzed doctoral candidates can then consider what lifestyle changes need to be implemented to accomplish academic success. This may include changes in the management of time, topics to research, fields of study to explore and a frame of mind to seek information. Keeping these targets in mind will help me focus on the tasks ahead and prepare for academic success.Goal Statement TwoWhile I love teaching, I also would like to be in a leadership position.
This way I can work on developing policies and procedures to aid in the success of students’ learning. The Ed.D program at ACE can afford me these. Pursuing a doctorate degree in educational leadership gives me a chance to enhance my practices and content knowledge at a deeper, more advanced level. Feedback will be is a huge part of my learning process. Popta, Kral, Camp, Martens, and Simons (2016) state, that feedback gives students a good idea of the quality of work produced by peers allowing them gaining insight and confidence in their own work.
I will get the opportunity give feedback, but more importantly reflect on valuable feedback I receive. Peer- review will be the driving force as I work on my dissertation. Goal Statement Three My educational experiences so far have led me to believe that teachers should take into account the type of students they have in the classroom. Learning should be engaging, involve practice and is a lifelong journey. I am a visual learner and tend to be more engaged when learning topics that draw my interest. Also, the mode of delivery in teaching plays a big part in my learning.
According to Barkley (2010), learning is a process that involves making sense and analyzing new information, while connecting it to prior knowledge. I need to be an active participant in the learning process for content to be mastered. In their book Making a difference: Differentiation in International school, William Powell and Ochan Kusuma-Powell (2013) said, aspects that influence students’ learning requires an in-depth look at students and their diverse learning styles, which include learning preferences and obstacles, cultural background, language acquisition, personal interest and family histories. The Ed.
D program is a unique learning experience, the growth that I will gain from this program will help me be more open as a learner and teacher. My goal as a teacher is to empower my students to take risks, determine what they know and find solutions to what they don’t know. Failures will happen, the most important thing is learning from failures as this is how growth occurs, my goal as a learner is the same. Conclusion The personal qualities I will bring to the Ed.D program included my patience, communications, organization and analytical skills.
The most important quality I have is my love for teaching. I derive great joy in helping my students learn not only to the best of their ability but over and above their expectations. Professionally, one of my responsibilities at work is to provide solution and strategies for working with our diverse learners. Gaining an advanced degree in education will help me to apply new skills learned from the program into my teaching practices and professional development workshops to get maximum teacher buy-in for PD initiatives at my school.
Ultimately, the Ed.D program at ACE will lead to my career advancement in an educational leadership role.
