0 Introduction: Newspaperhas always been one of the major driving force in any social revolution tobring a better change in society. The importance of newspaper and their socialimpact is undisputable. In Maharashtra the newspapers like “KESARI”, “MARATHA”,”SAMANA” have threaded the social strings and brought the common man onpolitical stage in different times. The news papers have been known tounderstand the social vibration and bring them in lime light.
To serve thispurpose, it is imperative that the information support to address these issuesmust be strong with correct references over a reasonable length of time. Todaylibraries are much needed in every field and newspaper sector is not exceptionin this context. Newspaper industry is always engaged in providing currentinformation as well as they provide retrospective but significant informationin the form of editorial columns.
There is need of information at every step inthis industry.(3) In this context newspaper libraries are much significant tocater information needs which are needed for newspaper printing. “Newspaperlibraries have three fundamental characteristics: emphasis on very recentinformation, brevity and conciseness in its presentation and rapidity ofservice.
” (Aswale,2010). These libraries fulfill the information needs of editors which isessential for generation of newspaper in the form of text, graphics etc.1 Thewell organized news library of a daily newspaper undoubtedly plays a crucialrole in the production of news.
(Ward,Hansen and Mclead l988). As newspaper libraries have significant importance, newspaperowners or professionals have established their own libraries. However, users ofnewspaper libraries are limited and also the working staff in library is lessin number.
Generally a newspaper library is a type of ‘special library’. ANewspaper library is a collection of reference material, illustrations plannedto serve the daily need of a newspaper. In modern age of information science various mediums areavailable to access information, however, newspapers are considered to be thereliable source of information. Anewspaper is an effective media of information for social change in rural area.
They impart education and protect freedom of information of people apart fromonly providing information. But the newspapers must accept the challenge toprovide the latest and up to date information effectively. Therefore, in the present article we have discussedabout the state of some of news paper libraries in Kolhapur city, user study ofthese libraries, the services provided by these libraries and the challengesbefore these kinds of libraries.
We have chosen Kolhapur for this teststudy as Kolhapur is semi urban area with rich traditional heritage and is atrue representative of the developing country like India. Kolhapur is an historical city in the Panchganga river basin in Maharashtra stateand home town of cooperative movement in agriculture sector. Kolhapur has educational institutions forengineering, medicine, and agriculture including Shivaji University. Kolahpuris among some of the socially and economically forward cities inMaharshtra. It has birth place ofseveral social reforms and witness of rule of one of the socially progressiveruler “Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj”. Newspapers are part of social life of the city.Pudhari is one of the popular Marathi daily published from Kolhapur and is the4th largest Marathi Newspaper Daily.
Newspapers writing inopposition to colonial power were discovering that if a readership is primed towant strong opinion, the strongest voice will capture the largest number. (Brock 2013) 1.1 Definition of Newspaper Library:A collection of reference books, pamphlets, reports,press-cuttings and government publications provided to serve the need of thestaff of a daily newspaper. 1.2 Scope ofstudy: This study deals with the various aspectsof the evaluation of library services available in the newspaper libraries inKolhapur city. Scope of this study is limited to the newspaper libraries inKolhapur city.
The various newspaper available in Kolhapur include:-· Daily Pudhari · Daily Sakaal· Daily Tarun Bharat· Daily Maharashart Times· Daily Punyanagri· Daily LokmatThe newspaper libraries of the three popular newspapers areconsidered for the present study. Name of the Newspaper Library Sakal Lokmat Pudhari 1.3 Objectivesof the study:· To study the purpose of using newspaper library by thestaff of press and external users.· To evaluate adequacy of library services provided by newspaperlibraries· To know the strength and weakness of the newspaperlibrary.· To evaluate usefulness or relevance of collection of newspaperlibraries towards satisfying needs of users.1.4 Research Methodology: For thisstudy, survey method has been used.
The information is gathered by visiting therespective news paper libraries. The data is presented in tables and analyzedfor further results. 2.0 Major Findings andsuggestions:2.1Information resources available in the press libraries:Information resources are backbone of any library. A newspaper library needs to cater thereading needs of wide user range from administrative and executives toreporters, column writers and other newspaper related staff. The usersof Newspaper libraries are Editorial board members, Staff , Visitors, ResearchStudents, Press reporters etc.
Therefore, the library collection should consist of balance stock of book,periodicals, reference book, clipping files, clipping photos and newspaper. Thewide range of the collection enables the staff to provide variety in thenewspaper content with authentic supplementary sources. The information resources available in thenews libraries under study are presented in Table 1.
